Los Angeles Opera: Gianni Schicchi & Pagliacci at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

Why see Los Angeles Opera: Gianni Schicchi & Pagliacci?

a starry Double bill

Kicking off the 30th season, iconic director Woody Allen turns his talents to the Opera as he directs Placido Domingo in his 2008 staging of Puchinni's comic classic Gianni Schicchi, before Domingo picks up the baton to conduct the second part of this double bill - Franco Zeffirelli's production of the dark drama Pagliacci.

My devoted friend Gianni Schicchi

Taking its lead from Dante's Divine Comedy, Gianni Schicchi is the tale of devious Gianni Schicci who is tasked with helping the relatives of a rich old man 'reinterpret' his will to be far more favorable towards them. Schicci accepts the job with glee, seizing the chance to serve himself, and so begins a classic Puchinni yarn featuring disguises, young lovers and of course, plenty of moral ambiguities. This one act opera birthed perhaps Puchinni's most beloved aria - "O mio babbino caro"

I will always be yours - the story of pagliacci

Transplanted from the late 19th Century to a stark urban landscape, the hair-raising Pagliacci concerns the tumultuous affair of Canio and his adulterous wife Nedda. Whilst their marriage disintegrates they must play their parts in a circus, but unbeknownst to the audience, the cutckholoded Canio takes his problems to work with him, with fatal results. Starring Marco Berti, Ana Maria Martinez and George Gagnidze.
