Why see Reasons To Be Pretty?
Reasons To Be Pretty is a Tony-nominated play by Neil LaBute which examines our dark fixation with beauty and appearances from the perspective of two couples, one of which is facing some serious relationship issues thanks to the tricky subject of looks. LaBute's play was nominated for a Tony in 2009 for Best Play.
The play is a hard-edged comedy which unfolds when Greg makes an off-hand remark comparing the attractiveness of a colleague to that of his girlfriend, Steph. This is misinterpreted by Steph as not being at all in her favor and, despite Greg's protests, the couple embark on an emotional battle surrounding body image. The friction in their relationship plays out alongside their friends' marriage, where successful Kent is not shy to admit how 'perfect' his life his. He has an attractive wife and a good job where he enjoys admiring (and sometimes even more) his female co-workers.
