Barcelona at Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

Why see Barcelona?

West Coast premiere

A tourist fantasy turns into something quite different in Bess Wohl's incisive new drama, which receives its West Coast premiere at the Geffen. Directed by Trip Cullman, Barcelona explores the cultural battle that erupts between two lonely people on a one night stand.

One of theater's rising stars, Wohl has a number of acclaimed Off-Broadway shows to her name, including Small Mouth Sounds and American Hero. She's also behind a new as yet untitled ABC show from Shonda Rhimes, starring Kerry Washington.

What is Barcelona About?

While on holiday in Barcelona, American tourist Irene catches the eye of Spaniard Manuel at a party. Egged on by her friends, she accompanies him back to his apartment at the end of the night. However what begins as a carefree fling devolves into something far more complicated as Manuel's anti-Americanism comes to the surface, and the values and identity of The Old World and The New are thrown into passionate opposition.
