Why see Outside Mullingar?

Will They, Or Won't They?

Set in the permanently overcast Irish countryside, Outside Mullingar is a witty romcom about neighbors Rosemary and Anthony, and their feelings of mutual attraction which have remained secret for decades. A far lighter piece than his Pulitzer Prize and Tony winner Doubt (later adapted into a Meryl Streep starring movie), John Patrick Stanley's play still speckles its comedy with insights into the darker side of human relationships.

The show debuted to great acclaim on Broadway in 2014, with Debra Messing among the cast. Leading this Geffen Playhouse production are Broadway vet Jarlath Conroy (The Seagull, The Iceman Cometh) and Jessica Collins (Zero Dark Thirty), while Artistic Director Randall Arney directs.

What is Outside Mullingar About?

Anthony Reilly and Rosemary Muldoon should have got together years ago, but Anthony always seemed ruluctant. Rosemary diswayed countless suitors in her younger years in the hopes that Anthony would confess his love, but now both of them are middle-aged, and seemingly both drifting into lives of singledom. When a family death brings them under the same room, the wholly unexpected reason for Anthony's hesitancy is finally revealed.
