American Idiot at La Mirada Theatre

Why see American Idiot?

The Tony-winning hit comes to La Mirada!

The 2010 double Tony Award-winning hit rock opera American Idiot has found a huge following worldwide and garnered more fans of the band behind it, Green Day. Written by the band's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer, the musical follows three working-class men from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they struggle to find themselves in a world filled with contradictions and broken dreams. This intense show features every track from Green Day's same-named album, plus several new tunes from their follow-up LP, 21st Century Breakdown.

What is it about?

American Idiot is a one-act, through-sung stage musical, based entirely around the album of the same name. In addition to these tracks, more songs were added from additional albums that included the b-sides, and an unreleased song called "When It's Time".

The story, expanded from that of the concept album, centers on three disaffected young men, Johnny, Will, and Tunny who take three very different paths through life. Whilst Johnny and Tunny flee the inertia of their suburban lives by heading to the city, they are soon divided as Tunny enlists in the military and is deployed overseas to a war zone in the Middle East. Johnny remains in the city, and faces challenges including drug addiction and the pain of a broken relationship. Meanwhile, Will has stayed in the suburbs to work on his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend, which comes with its own challenges.

WOW, this show just blew me away!!!

So, I am not a fan of Green Day, which may have helped me fall in love with this show in an instant! The high energy performances left me breathless and wanting more. The amazingly talented performers channeled Angst, Zeitgeist, and--well, Green Day-- perfectly. I wish I could see the show again, bummer, though it does not play in my neck of the woods anymore (even though I did contemplate driving to Atlanta for a few seconds). I really really want to have a DVD of this show. I would watch it over and over again. GO SEE THIS SHOW!!! This is my favorite musical to date--and I have seen quite a few musicals. Oh, and I would watch Green Day live because of this show, as well. GO SEE THIS SHOW!!! ... Read more

A proper rock musical

Disclaimer: My wife and I are mid-60's old and generally republican types. We've seen pretty much everything. We both loved it. We went there expecting a rock musical done by a punk-rock band, and that's what we got. I have seen some negative reviews, and I cannot believe there are people who go to a show not having any idea what to expect from a punk-rock musical. Did they not even see the title of the show? The only thing I would ding it for is that the balance between the instruments and voices leaned too much to the instruments so if you weren't familiar with the lyrics, you had no idea what they were singing much of the time. I highly recommend reading the lyrics before going if you don't already know them. At least read the wiki article. I would NOT take children: There's much drug use and some simulated sex, but mainly because they won't have the maturity to understand what's happening to the characters in a meaningful way. ...
