Newsies - The Musical at La Mirada Theatre

Why see Newsies - The Musical?

Seven Years After Its Broadway Debut, The Newsies Returns

Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Newsies outlines the Newsboys Strike of 1899 that happened in New York City. The show showcases exceptional choreography as well as telling the heartwarming tale of a young newspaper delivery boy Jack Kelly who acts as the face of the strike, determined to defend his friends.

After newspaper publishers raised their distribution prices for delivery boys, it caused the boys, who were mainly poor street kids to get together and take action. The show debuted to much success. It became the fastest of any Disney musical on Broadway to turn a profit and was nominated for eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, before winning two for Best Choreography and Best Original Score. The musical also received two Drama Desk Awards, for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Music and was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 2012 for Best Musical Theater Album.

The King of Broadway!!

I've seen the performance of the play on Netflix and I was blown away! I'm one of the rare people who saw the movie when it was released and fell in love with it on the spot. I saw it most of the 14 nights it was in our local theatre, and waited impatiently for the VHS release. This Broadway version is not exactly the same as the movie, but it is EVERY BIT as good as the movie! The songs from the movie are still there, with slightly different lyrics, and there are several new songs. Jack's character is more in-depth than in the movie, and it adds so much interest to the already awesome story. I was excited when I saw it available on Netflix and was riveted from the moment the first note played right through to the very end. In the two days since I found it on Netflix, I've watched it at least 7 times! I live 5 hours away from Raleigh, but am already planning to travel there to see this (it's early March 2018) play as it's one of my favorite stories of all time! I can't wait! ... Read more
