A new Swedish boyfriend causes ripples in Paul Oakley Stovall's uproarious comedy
Paul Oakley Stovall's Immediate Family first appeared in LA under the title As Much As You Can in 2008. Several rewrites later, and following a tremendously successful run in Chicago three years ago, this comedy of family dysfunction and race relations returns!
The setting is a family reunion in the affluent Hyde Park area of Chicago. The well-to-do African-American Bryants have come together for a wedding, but the topic that comes to dominate proceedings is who one of the children has brought home with him - his Swedish boyfriend Kristian. Playing out like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner for the 21st Century, Immediate Family is a fast-paced, dynamic situational comedy, that tackles big issues with an admirable lightness of touch.
This Los Angeles production is directed by Cosby Show alumni and Tony winner Phylicia Rashad (A Raisin in the Sun), and stars Mark Jude Sullivan, Cynda Williams and Kamal Angelo Bolden.
