The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Fred Kavli Theatre

Why see The Hunchback of Notre Dame?

a classic new musical comes to town

Cabrillo Music Theatre bring the gloriously gothic Disney movie to life with this brand new production! Based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo (Les Miserables) and featuring the 1995 film's tunes by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a captivating adventure full of heart and drama where love soars to triumph over adversity.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Set in Renaissance Paris, the people of the city whisper of a mysterious bellringer high in the cathedral above them. Quasimodo, meaning "half-formed" was orphaned by the cruel and racist Judge Claude Frollo when he murdered his fleeing gypsy mother. As penance, Frollo raises the baby into a young, lonely man from the confines of Notre Dame Cathedral.

A sweet, yearning figure, Quasimodo longs for the company of other people; as much as he loves his three gargoyle friends Victor, Hugo and Laverne, he is desperate to join the throngs below, especially for the annual Feast Of Fools.

Sneaking out despite the orders of Frollo, he encounters a beautiful yet kind gypsy woman Esmeralda, who saves him from a horrified lynch mob, much to the anger of Frollo - who happens to desire her for himself. In turn granting her sanctuary and helping her escape to the Court of Miracles, he invokes the wrath of Frollo, who is determined to burn Paris to the ground to satisfy his lust. However, he finds help in the most unlikely of sources; the heroic Captain Phoebus, who has also fallen for Esmeralda. Together, they work to save her and the gypsy folk, and try to stop Frollo's horrific genocide. With a soaring score that includes 'Just One Day', 'Feast Of Fools' and 'Hellfire', this is a musical that entertains, shocks and extolls the virtue of tolerance.

An amazing show

Incredible show with some of the most beautiful songs (taken from the Disney animated feature) sung by some truly talented performers. Although the story isn't quite the same as the Disney feature (it gets dark and adds the Victor Hugo novel ending), the sets and costuming are fantastic. There's also REAL fire on stage! The only drawback was some rather odd "artistic choices" in direction that made me scratch my head in question. Still, a wonderful show to check out, but not quite for little kids! This version isn't for little ones. ... Read more

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame"

This is a very grown-up interpretation of the musical play, more nuanced and deeper than other versions I've seen. Will North, who plays Quasimodo, is terrific. He must have surprised a lot of people who were expecting the Disney version. Cassandra Murphy owns the show as Esmeralda. She's a tiny powerhouse with one of those voices that can blast the ears off the back row. She's completely invested in her character's independence, intelligence, honesty, values and need for no rescue. The musical score is Alan Menkin's best, powerful and poignant. My complements, also, to the set designer. The cathedral Notre Dame's dark, sooty, intimidating atmosphere is well captured. Just one quibble. The staging of Claude Frollo's death needs improvement - it's unclear exactly what Quasimodo does to him. This creepy villain deserves a definite, cathartic fall to damnation. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this production. ... Read more
