Why see Billy Childs: Map To The Treasure - Reimagining Laura Nyro?
An Celebration of A Songwriting Great
One of America's most gifted singer-songwriter's, the irreplaceable Laura Nyro died in 1997, leaving behind a rich, jazz-infused discography that has inspired everyone from Jenny Lewis to Bette Midler. Last year, composer Billy Childs oversaw Map to the Treasure, a Grammy Award-winning album that paid homage to Nyro with the help of guest singers such as Renee Fleming and Alison Krauss.
Now Childs brings the record to Los Angeles as part of Walt Disney Hall's JZ1 series. Lending her dulcet vocals to the evening is Becca Stevens, whose jazzy eponymous band made the successful leap into complex pop music on this year's Perfect Animal. Rounding out the bill are acclaimed pianist Brad Mehldau and singer Alicia Olatuja.
