Why see Into The Woods?

Experience The Magic Of Sondheim

The Hollywood Bowl is set to be transformed into a land far, far away this Summer! Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's timeless musical Into The Woods will spread its musical magic over three nights at the historic venue during an extra special staged concert production. Forming part of its summer 2019 programming, the fairytale-filled song and dance spectacular is packed to the rafters with some of Sondheim's most memorable show tunes including 'No One Is Alone', 'Children Will Listen' and 'Giants In The Sky'.

First opening on the Great White Way in 1987, Into The Woods won three Tony awards for its Broadway run, garnering the accolades for best score, book and lead actress (Canadian stage and screen veteran Joanna Gleason). It won yet another Tony for Best Revival of a Musical when it returned to New York in 2003 and was immortalized on the silver screen in 2014 with a feature film starring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and James Corden.

What Is Into The Woods About?

Sondheim's trademark angular melodies and Lapin's witty lyrics wrap around an amalgamation of a series of Brothers Grimm tales. The Baker and his wife are at the center of the web of stories, driving the action with their deep desire to have a child. When they're visited by a local crone, she reveals she placed a curse on their family ages back and will reverse their barrenness if they acquire crucial ingredients for one of her potions. Together they set off, meeting a host of colorful and familiar characters on the way. There's Little Red, who is trying to escape the clutches of the big bad wolf and visit her grandmother, the witch's very own daughter Rapunzel, Cinderella, who yearns to go the King's festival, Jack, whose beanstalk heralds a very angry giant and the princes chasing after their long lost loves.

All is Right Into the Woods

Like "Chicago", this show can lose its sets/scenery and still be a grand entertainment, for doing so brings the focus to the clever fusion of the stories, the performances, and Sondheim’s music, lyrics, and rhymes. ITW has always been somewhat lost between being a “Fractured Fairy Tales” or “How to Parent” guide for aspiring moms and dads. After all these years, this production gets it right. Color-blind casting allows cultural flourishes and broadens its appeal to new audiences. Every cast member is perfect. Milky White finally gets a star turn and elicits lots of laughs and audience sympathy. The puppetry more than makes up for any lack of sets…certainly right up there with War Horse or Lion King. It’s the director who is to blame for the irresistible and almost illegal amount of fun, laughs, humor, pratfalls, and characterizations that cast members deliver flawlessly. Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Jack’s mother who’s “There’s no time to sit and dither. While her withers wither with her” diction is nailed on the head. This is the most fun and laughs you may have ever have in a theater. I’ll probably go back for a third dose before July 30. Don’t miss your first. It’s THAT good. ... Read more

Love me some Milky White!

I had no doubt I would be mesmerized by this stellar cast but the big surprise is that I fell in love with the brilliance of James Ortiz’ puppet creations, especially Milky White. Initially marveling at the grace and dexterity with which Kennedy Kanagawa moves Milky, I soon realized that Kennedy WAS Milky White, a heartwarming achievement that endeared both the actor and the cow to all the audience. ... Great actors and incredible music!

We loved the show! The acting and singing were phenomenal, the music was beyond awesome. It was long but entertaining the whole time. We also ate at a great place beforehand called the Farmers Market which had very good food including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. The veggie melt was unique and good, and my husband loved his grass fed burger. We went for a Sunday matinee which required masks, i suppose to make it an all-inclusive event which we were totally ok with. We found a parking spot half a block away from the theater since it was Sunday, total bonus! The drink selection during the intermission was extremely limited so had to drink something i dont like but I was just grateful to have something with caffeine before the 2nd half. No dress code but we still dressed up! We love the Guthrie! ... Read more
