Los Angeles Opera - Aida at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

Why see Los Angeles Opera - Aida?

returning after 16 years!

Featuring mainstage classics Il Trovatore, Don Giovanni, and La Cenerentola and innovative new presentations, the Los Angeles Opera's 21/22 season invites audiences into the enchanting world of opera once more. Keeping up a rousing pace, programming continues with Francesco Zambello's luminous production of Verdi's high stakes melodrama Aida, featuring Latonia Moore and Russell Thomas.

Zambello's sweeping set and lavish design partners perfectly with Verdi's passionate sonic moments that range from the exquisitely intimate to the dramatically epic. Set in Ancient Egypt, the story centers around the conflict between forbidden love and hatred for one's enemies.

What is the story?

Aida, a seemingly lowly Ethiopian slave girl is in love with her Egyptian captor Radames, a distinguished warrior on the battlefield. Unbeknownst to everyone, she is in fact the captured princess from Ethiopia, whose furious father is on his way to rescue her, laying waste to Egypt in his path. Adding to the sense of danger is Amneris, the Egyptian princess, whose intense love for Radames cannot shake the feeling that the mysterious Aida just maybe her rival in love.

Aida

Not your grandfather’s traditional Aida but beautifully performed and orchestrated as well as strikingly original. No kitschy half naked Nubian dancers or nubile ladies in peekaboo outfits, elephants, cast of thousands, etc. that people expect to see in a grand opera. The music is and should be the star and it’s respectfully focused throughout. See it with an open mind and not done prefabricated expectation. You’ll be surprised, engaged, and moved by the story and the singing characterizations. ... Read more
