3 Reasons Why Wicked Is STILL The Most Magical Show In Town

Since bursting onto Broadway way back in 2003, Wicked has remained in the top spot as one the world's, and mine, favorite musicals! With over 50 million people having seen the show worldwide, counting the four times I’ve seen it, just what makes Wicked still so magical 15 years on?

The Music
As a young teen discovering the Wicked soundtrack was a life-changing moment. From belting out Defying Gravity in my bedroom (to my parent's quiet annoyance I’m sure!) to performing Popular at college, Wicked’s music has been there at most moments in my life. Even as I type I am mouthing along to the lyrics at my desk, including the harmonies…

Written by the ever wonderful Stephen Schwartz it cannot be denied that Wicked’s score is one of the most beloved and famous ones around. Full of ready-made anthems, insanely beautiful harmonies and spine-tingling chorus' you can never get bored with this score. Wicked has also transcended over to the mainstream, with Kanye West himself sampling Popular on one of his YouTube videos, and hey, if it’s good enough for Kanye it’s good enough for us!

The Story
Always a fan of some female empowerment Wicked isn’t one of your run of the mill, hum-drum romances where boy meets girl they fall in love and live happily ever after. No, from the beginning Wicked stood out from the crowd with TWO female leads whose concerns went further than if someone loved them or not. With that Wicked set a prime example for girls, and boys, across the world that you really can defy gravity, and sealed the deal for me!

The Production
From the first time I saw Wicked with my sisters back in 2013 to the fourth time (yes I know, I’m a fan okay) just last week, Wicked continues to wow and amaze me. As the first chords play and the curtain rises to reveal the citizens of Oz I’ve got goosebumps right up until the very end. From the amazing performances to the dazzling lights, larger-than-life choreography and jaw-dropping effects, Wicked transports you from the theatre auditorium to the magical land of Oz! And, let's not forget that Act One closer which NEVER gets dull.

Wicked is just one of those musicals that reminds you what the theatre is all about!
