Judi Dench Joins The CATS Movie!

Author News DeskNews Desk, October 19th, 2018

The movie adaptation will be released on December 20, 2019

After Andrew Lloyd Webber dropped the bombshell that his hit musical CATS was to be made into a feature-length movie musical we all eagerly anticipated the news on who would be starring as who.

With the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift and James Corden all set to star, the latest addition to this star-studded klan is Queen of theatre herself, Judi Dench. Tony-winning Dench is set to star as Old Deuteronomy in the Top Hopper helmed movie spectacular.

Idris Elba is also rumoured to be joining the cast but no word as of yet on who he'll play!

Did you know that Judi Dench was meant to be the original Grizabella in the 1981 West End debut? But due to injury, she had to depart the production, allowing Elaine Paige to step in and star!

Dench has certainly had a glittering and varied career. Having been nominated for over 173 awards, Dench has an impressive 63 (!) accolades to her name. The star's extensive list of awards includes an Oscar, a Tony, an Olivier, two Golden Globes and 11 BAFTA's. What an achievement!

Can't wait till December 2019 to see CATS, well have no fear, the hit stage production is on its way to you on its national tour! Re-live all your favorite memories (see what we did there?) with the musical's hit songs 'Jellicle Ball, 'Mr Macavity' and of course the all-important 'Memory'!

What is CATS about>

Once a year, a local tribe of street cats, all with their own distinct names and personalities, come together for the legendary """"Jellicle Ball"""". Here they entertain each other, tell stories, and listen to the wisdom given by their elderly and respected leader, Old Deuteronomy.

Halfway through, their gathering is interrupted by the tattered and torn Grizabella. Repulsed by her sorry state, the Jellicle Cats shun her and chase her off, despite the pleas of Old Deuteronomy to show compassion. But what happens when their beloved leader is catnapped by the dastardly master-cat of crime, MacAvity (think a feline version of Moriarty!)? Will the Jellicle cats be able to save him? And WHO is the mysterious Mr. Mistoffelees?
