What Did The Critics Think of What The Constitution Means To Me in LA?

Author AbigailAbigail, January 23rd, 2020

Now playing at the Mark Taper Forum

Heidi Schrek's Tony-nominated play has landed at the Mark Taper Forum as part of its hotly anticipated North American tour. Now starring Maria Dizzie, in Schreck's place, what did the local critics think of the New York favorite?

The Los Angeles Times was full of praise for the production saying, "this buoyant and often-stirring civics lesson is the theatrical curriculum Americans desperately need now." They continued their praise by calling What The Constitution Means To Me a "playful, often amusing and at times piercing in its pathos."

Stage Raw said, "As playwright, Schreck has filtered her personal journey of discovery into a vital work that challenges us to consider our heritage as Americans - to preserve the good and discard the bad. And she offers it up to us with an abundant supply of humor and humanity that unequivocally drives her message home."

What is What The Constitution Means To Me about?

Whilst written in the Obama era, What The Constitution Means To Me is as topical and necessary as ever. Originally performed by regular Off-Broadway actor Schreck, it recreates one of the American Legion halls she travelled to in her teenage years, where she earned accolades for Casting Spells: The Crucible Of The Constitution.

Whilst sunny and optimistic in her yellow blazer, she traces the stories of four generations of women in her family and their direct relationship with the constitution, how it omitted and forsook them, something still happening to women today. Comedy, drama, memoir and debate collide in a thought provoking whirlwind brought deftly together by Schreck's magnetic personal charm and intelligent writing. Prepare to laugh, cry and contemplate long after the curtains come down.

What The Constitution Means To Me is now playing at the Mark Taper Forum through to February 28.
