Once upon a time, in the glitzy goodbye to silent cinema, vaudeville mogul Alexander Pantages raised the curtain on his grandest dream: Hollywood’s last movie palace
The Hollywood Pantages Theatre, a glittering Art Deco jewel at Hollywood & Vine, opened on June 4, 1930, as the final movie palace built in Hollywood and the last project of vaudeville mogul Alexander Pantages, designed by architect B. Marcus Priteca. Originally hosting both films and live vaudeville, it shifted to mostly movies during the Depression, later passing from Fox to Howard Hughes in 1949, who made it the glamorous home of the Academy Awards from 1950 to 1959 - including the first televised Oscars in 1953.
It became famous for blockbuster premieres before closing as a cinema in 1977 and reopening as a live-theater venue with Bubbling Brown Sugar. A $10 million restoration in 2000 revived its dazzling chandeliers and golden detail, and today it thrives as one of L.A.'s top-grossing live theaters, hosting Broadway blockbusters like The Lion King, Wicked, and Hamilton while still radiating the old Hollywood magic that's been its signature for nearly a century.
