The overall response was a positive one with the Hollywood Reporter calling the production "Sexy, stylish, modern yet steeped in Old World charm". They continued with, "The Light in the Piazza taps into the lush, string-heavy strains of Rodgers' era while fusing rich, modern arrangements that make a powerful case for score being the defining element in musical theater."

The Los Angeles Times praised Renee Fleming saying, "Floating about the stage in a perfumed cloud, Fleming upholds her goddess stature as an opera diva while portraying Margaret as a maternal lioness who can still command a room with her elegance and fire."

Entertainment Weekly said, "The Light in the Piazza has the capacity to touch you to the quick, with its heartrending tale of love at first sight and the struggles of parents to do right by themselves and their children."

What is The Light in the Piazza about?

The Light in the Piazza is an engaging and invigorating evocation of young love in 1950s Florence in the vein of classic American musicals. But under the surface of beauty and romance, there are long-held secrets waiting to unravel, threatening to shatter the lives of central character Margaret and her beloved daughter Clara.
