Natalia Makarova's La Bayadere Performed by the ABT
Experience the ultimate tale of love, betrayal and the wrath of the gods in Marius Petipa's La Bayadere, interpreted by permanent guest artist, iconic prima ballerina and choreographer Natalia Makarova. When she was a young girl, Makarova saw the ballet in her home city of Leningrad and was so inspired by it she later created this version for the ABT in 1980.
Set in the exotic climes of India, the story follows the temple dancer Nikiya and her archrival, the envious Gamzatti. The two rivals vie for the affections of the warrior Solor, who has sworn his love to the heroine Nikiya, yet a dreadful fate awaits the young lovers when Nikiya's scorned suitor the High Brahmin plots with Gamzatti to end Nikiya's life, resulting in the famous Kingdom of The Shades scene.
