Los Angeles Opera - St. Matthew Passion at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

Why see Los Angeles Opera - St. Matthew Passion?

Company premiere

Spring 2022 sees the Los Angeles Opera host the company premiere of John Neumeier's world-renowned staging of Bach's intricate and awe-inspiring St. Matthew Passion. Held as one of the finest masterpieces in Western sacred music, Neumeire's production utilizes the talents of the Hamburg Ballet, marrying the score with the expressive power of dance, creating a near-perfect aural and visual experience.

Written in 1727, St. Matthew Passion portrays the last days of Jesus Christ, setting the last chapters of the Gospel of Matthew to sacred music, arias, and chorales. Neumeier's production first premiered in Hamburg in 1980 and was reviewed enthusiastically by Dance Magazine, who said 'One comes to feel that this is a community of people who have decided to enact the Passion as in a medieval mystery play. Each dancer expresses grief, doubt, questioning, or aggression so personally that each seems to have chosen his or her own role.'

Don't miss your chance to see this rare gem, presented by the LA Opera.

St. Matthew’s Passion at LAO

3 hour down and 3 hours back—Arroyo Grande to LA. So worth it. I didn’t know what to expect, but this production was fantastic. James Conlon’s pre talk helped us to understand the nuances of the music, dance, and soloists. A perfect performance for the Lenten Season. Thank you. Kathleen Fisher ... Read more
