Love, lust and the wrath of the gods collide in Wagner's everpopular opera
Los Angeles Opera's 2021/22 season invites audiences into the enchanting world of opera once more. Programming continues Wagner's romantic masterwork, Tannhauser, which features the conducting talents of James Conlon, the LA Opera Orchestra and up and coming German tenor Issachah Savage in the title role.
Damnation awaits those who enjoy the pleasures of Venus, none more so than Tannhauser, the court minstrel who lives in the Venusberg- the home of the legendary deity, and has pledged his love to her. But when his desires are satiated and he begs to leave, his hostess turns sour and curses his name. Once freed and able to live the simple life he craves, he realizes that the mark of Venus does not easily wash away...
