Bekah Brunstetter's insightful drama makes its world premiere during the Geffen Playhouse's brand new season
As part of its brand new 2018/19 theatre season, the Geffen Playhouse is breaking new ground and bolstering the local community, working in partnership with LA's very own Echo Theater Company to present the world premiere of The Cake. A poignant, timely drama from American Gods and This Is Us writer and producer Bekah Brunstetter, the production explores human nature and conflict in an insightful, respectful and compassionate way.
Inspired by recent flash points in the fight for LGBQT rights, The Cake follows North Carolina baker Della, played by That 70s Show's Debra Jo Rupp, a pillar of the local community and Church. When she discovers that Jen, the girl she helped raised, is all grown up and returning home to the chimes of wedding bells, Della is ecstatic and begins to bake her a wedding cake. Yet her faith and upbringing is tested when she discovers Jen is marrying another woman.
