Why see Los Angeles Philharmonic - Pictures at an Exhibition?
a spectacular meeting of art and music
A unique and celebrated piece in the classical spectrum, Modest Mussorgsky's acclaimed work 'Pictures at an Exhibition' uses music to describe artworks in this dazzling display of orchestral mastery. Famously re-orchestrated by numerous other composers since its creation in 1874, Los Angeles Philharmonic present Ravel's stunning 1922 version at the Hollywood Bowl.
The work was created as a tribute to Viktor Hartmann, the artist, architect and close friend of Mussorgsky, after his death. The composer based the piece on Hartmann's exhibition at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, taking the listener through an aural tour of the visuals on display. The result was a composition like no other and Ravel's orchestration further cements this as a special and essential piece.
