Diane Wiest's Performance is Intense and Sublime

So, I went to this play with a friend and I didn't realize it was a Samuel Beckett play. Neither of us had read up on it so it was a total surprise for us both. After the first twenty minutes, I had a hunch it was from an Irish writer but still hadn't caught on that it was Beckett. Being open to the sort of play it was, I enjoyed it though I noticed a lot sleepy viewers in the audience. Basically, if you just "go with it" without trying to read any plot or logic into it, you'll be fine if you've an ear for Beckett's linguistic genius and a sensitivity to the dismal yet playful absurdity of life. This play also seems to delve into a very comical commentary on the nature of human intimacy refracted through the pulverized, life-long marriage of Winnie, Wiest's character, and Willy. We ate at Otium first nearby which is gorgeous and fun. Also, try to sit in the upper rows near center as you'll have a better sense of things. As always, the Taper never disappoints.

My wife and I couldn't wait til the intermission to leave. Boring and incomprehensible from the start. I could think of nothing but " the emperor has no clothes". Theater of the Absurd indeed.
