I was taken the moment I settled into my seat to see the Simon Stephens play "Heisenberg." A nearly bare setting - two small tables, two small chairs, with part of the audience on the up stage side, the rest of the audience in their usual place just beyond the fourth wall. The play would take place in a sort of passage way between the audience, the actors coming on stage as the announcements were still in process. This was going to be special, and it was. I love theatre, I love to witness a story playing out, and all that risk in a live performance, and when you forget you're there, that all your senses are open and available to take it in, it is, sometimes, a transformative experience. The connection between these two unlikely characters was deep, loving, suspicious and fraught with vulnerability. Mary-Louise Parker was effervescent and transcendent as "Georgie" and Denis Arndt as Alex" provided all the fragile armor an aging yet still vibrant comrade needed to muster. Amazing.
