Heisenberg at Mark Taper Forum

Why see Heisenberg?

Direct from Broadway

Direct from its critically praised Broadway run in late 2016, this explosive drama makes its way to Los Angeles for its West Coast Premiere, with stars Mary-Louise Parker and Dennis Arndt reprising their roles. Produced by Manhattan Theatre Club, it is the second work by award-winning British playwright Simon Stephens to make it on the Great White Way, following his stomping, Tony-winning triumph, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

Starring in the two lead roles are Emmy and Tony winner Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds, RED) and Kenneth Walsh (Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Twin Peaks). Parker has a fruitful relationship with MTC, having won her Tony Award in 2001 for the Broadway transfer of their production of Proof.

What is it about?

Telling the story of a bizarre, out-of-the-blue act that has life-changing repercussions for two strangers, our story starts as just just another day on a crowded London train platform. A woman named Clare approaches a much older man named Alex, whom she's never met before, and kisses him. This surprising moment sets in motion a series of events which will change both Clare and Alex's lives forever.

A deep connection between an unlikely pair, makes for magic.

I was taken the moment I settled into my seat to see the Simon Stephens play "Heisenberg." A nearly bare setting - two small tables, two small chairs, with part of the audience on the up stage side, the rest of the audience in their usual place just beyond the fourth wall. The play would take place in a sort of passage way between the audience, the actors coming on stage as the announcements were still in process. This was going to be special, and it was. I love theatre, I love to witness a story playing out, and all that risk in a live performance, and when you forget you're there, that all your senses are open and available to take it in, it is, sometimes, a transformative experience. The connection between these two unlikely characters was deep, loving, suspicious and fraught with vulnerability. Mary-Louise Parker was effervescent and transcendent as "Georgie" and Denis Arndt as Alex" provided all the fragile armor an aging yet still vibrant comrade needed to muster. Amazing. ... Read more
