Highly Acclaimed Musical Lackawanna Blues Will Show In L.A
Lackawanna Blues tells the story of Ruben Santiago, Jr, a young boy who meets the nurturing Miss Rachel, or Nanny as he calls her, and lives in her boarding house with her in the town of Lackawanna in New York. The play is creatively told through memories and testimonials from Miss Rachel as Rubens life is changed forever.
Set during the 1950s and 1960s, the play depicts the prominence of soul and blues music in a harsh racial climate and a segregated society. It debuted in New York in 2001 to acclaimed reviews, with playwright Ruben Santiago Hudson receiving an OBIE special citation and musician Bill Sims, Jr. receiving an OBIE for his music. The poignant musical follows Ruben Santiago, Jr, as he learns about life through the characters Miss Rachel invites into her boarding house.
