Bat Sheva DanceRoyce Hall 2019

4/5

I have been urging dance critics and my friends to see a ballet two times if they like the piece because one viewing is rarely ever enough to truly appreciate and understand something that took the choreographer months and months to create. The second viewing allow us to slow the movement down, become more familiar, understand why we liked certain parts and even remember sequences that slipped by. We can intellectualize and discuss the piece with greater clarity. Last week with a near full house at Royce Hall, we got to engage in that process. Bat Sheva in "Venezuela," performed the same ballet twice, in the same evening, first to Gregorian chants, (which did not really compliment the movement,) and than to various genres of music. I do believe that "Venezuela's" great strength was providing us that opportunity of being more familiar with a ballet. If any of you enjoyed 'Venezuela," then next time you see dance think about going twice. For a good comprehensive review see Laura Bleiberg's column.
