A Christmas Tradition
Every year, our Christmas season kicks off with our family attending Stevie Wonder's House Full of Toys. I have been a fan of the Wonder man since I was a teenager and have seen him in concert at least 30 times! Once I even bought him roses. It doesn't matter where you sit. I've been front row center, as well as at the top of the stadium, and have loved each show more than the previous one. What's so fun is that I have greatly enjoyed the performances of some artists that I probably would have not bought tickets to see. What a treat! From the late Tina Marie to India and Alicia, as well as Tommy Davidson (as a MC back in the day), or some unknown from the other side of the world that Stevie has discovered, this show always exceeds my expectations, This is our wonderful holiday treat with the Fabulous Mr, Wonder and a concert hall full of all of us who love him for his music, his soulful inner vision, and his deep compassion for all those less fortunate. I'm playing his music now.
The show that could have been......
I'm being generous with 3 stars. Stevie Wonder deserves a trillion stars. This was a night I so looked forward to. Talking Book & Innervisions in one night...a dream come true! Stevie came armed with the best of everything including band & guests..Tony Bennett, Dave Matthews, Pharrell Williams to name a few. There was only 1 minor problem...the sound/mix was beyond horrific. The show started off with Tony Bennett's mike not working (no big deal)...they got him another mike. It see/sawed from there...We saw the annual show with "Songs in the key of life" at the Nokia. Probably the best show I've ever seen...sound/acoustics just beautiful . I hope Stevie takes the venue back to the Nokia. The experience at the Staple Center fell woefully short. It's an honor to see/hear Stevie at any opportunity & I love supporting his cause. Unfortunately, the sound system/mix made for a lousy experience.
A Christmas Bummer
Terrible Sound. Poorly coordinated, slow moving concert. Second tier talent other than Stevie (although Lucas Nelson was good). We purchased tickets that indicated he would be doing Talking Book & Innervisions again. Nope. But again, the sound was atrocious - Bass so loud that it hurt my internal organs. And the performances of several classics were seriously compromised by the talent singing with him, typically singing slightly out of their range and making for a disappointing experience, to say the least. All in all, an unfocused and sloppy evening that left us pissed off that we dropped so much cash to sit on the second row for an evening of such mediocrity. The greatness of Stevie Wonder could never be diminished by a bad evening like this, but still, that was a bummer.
Stevie Tries
Stevie Wonder has a BIG heart, is a great presenter and is a wonderful performer. He had excellent guest. The problems. He teased the audience and had them wait. The sound system failed too many times. No excuse. Four hours is way too long for a concert. Concert goers should not feel frustrated and tired. Then leave just when the main attraction begins to sing. I don't need to see a Stevie Wonder Concert again, even if I had been given an excellent seat for free. Thank you Stevie
