Bernstein's Mass Fails
I really appreciate and enjoy this piece. But opening night with the L.A. Philharmonic was a complete disappointment. The worst thing was the sound design. The singers voices were not operatic in quality, and they were not adequately amplified to present the material. Much of the sound disappeared. The lighting design was weak, often leaving the viewing searching for the singers in the dark. The choreography was obvious, distracting, and mostly annoying. The costumes were obvious and unimaginative. The set was the most effective design element. The orchestra was wonderful, as was the conducting. All might have been forgiven if we could have heard the soloists.
