A program that shines a spotlight on German chamber music
The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Chamber Music 1 continues with a trio of Germanic classical chamber works for string ensembles. Select members of the world renowned orchestra will take to the stage and kick off the stirring program with Paul Hindemith's String trio, a stunning compositional feat of contrapuntal writing with fugue and canon-like tendencies, as well as a bracing, energetic spirit.
This is followed by Joseph Haydn's most well-known Piano Trio (no. 39), affectionately known as Gypsy thanks to its Hungarian folk dance-inspired rondo finale. Written in 1795, it contains some of Haydn's most recognisable music, zestiest melodies and upbeat rhythms. The evening comes to a close with Arnold Schoenburg's String Quartet no. 4, an electrifying exploration of the 12 note scale that would characterise his later works.
