The National's Bryce Dressner explores the groundbreaking work of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe
So said the revered American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, renowned for his powerful black and white images of iconic figures of the art and music world, as well as deeply moving self portraits and a sensitive, yet no nonsense treatment of controversial subject matter. Bryce Dressner, composer and guitarist of The National, explores and celebrates the impact of Mapplethorpe's considerable legacy in a special one-night-only marriage of music and photography entitled Triptych (Eyes Of Another).
Together with librettist Korde Arrington Tuttle, director Daniel Fish, vocal ensemble Roomful Of Teeth and 12 instrumentalists, Dressner weaves together Mapplethorpe's most poignant images with music and poetry to evoke the photographer's empathetic gaze, a bold view of what it means to love, express, toych, hurt and be human. Alluring, shocking, offending and intriguing, Dressner invites the audience to confront and experience Mapplethorpe directly and collectively, leaving no emotional stone unturned in his examination of a true genius.
