This fresh-from-Broadway production stars three-time Emmy Award Winner Cicely Tyson and was nominated for four 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for its star, Cicely Tyson.
Carrie Watts (Tyson) is an elderly woman who dreams of returning to her small hometown of Bountiful, TX one last time, against the wishes of her overprotective son and a daughter-in-law who dominates both of them. When denied her final wish, Carrie runs away from their cramped Houston apartment and boards a bus. Meeting a variety of people along the way, her journey becomes a heartbreaking but ultimately life-affirming and inspiring tale that examines the fragility of memory and celebrates the enduring power of hope and faith.
A Trip to Bountiful has been instrumental in garnering awards for its female stars since its first incarnation in 1954. Its 1954 staging earned Jo Van Fleet a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play at the 8th Tony Awards. The role of Carrie Watts won Geraldine Page the Academy Award for Best Actress for the film adaptation in 1985.
