Why see Los Angeles Opera - Orpheus and Eurydice?
An operatic/ballet hybrid comes to LA!
Greek mythology is the focus of this new masterpiece, performed by the dancers of Chicago's Joffrey Ballet. Designed, directed and choreographed by John Neumeier, with ballet originally written by Christoph Willibald Gluck; this new production is a collaboration between LA Opera with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Joffrey Ballet and Hamburg Ballet.
Based on the original Greek myth, the story of the tragic musician Orpheus takes place mostly in the dreaded underworld, where he hopes to rescue his beloved wife Eurydice. However, before he can reclaim her, he is faced with taming the the Furies and triumph Love's challenge; that he not look at her when leading her back to earth. Considered at the time to be a groundbreaking opera, it bridges the styles of both Handel and Mozart, and encoured composers that followed to experiment with more lyrical lines.
