Los Angeles Opera - West Side Story

Los Angeles Opera - West Side Story at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

Why see Los Angeles Opera - West Side Story?

The Broadway Classic As An Opera!

Los Angeles Opera brings the sizzling streets of 1950s New York back to the stage in a way you've likely never seen before! The artfully danced street warfare and arresting Rome-and-Juliet-esque romance of one of the greatest musicals ever to grace Broadway is given an operatic refresh by the company. Directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by James Conlon, the production retains the legendary choreography devised by Jerome Robbins, alongside Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's angular melodies, thrilling plot and explosive sneaker ballet numbers!

What is the story?

Like the Montagues and the Capulets, rival Big Apple gangs the Sharks and the Jets are divided by prejudice and hate. When two young affiliates of each gang, Maria and Tony, meet and fall in love, it inflames the opposing group's warfare. Determined not to let anything get in the way of their destiny together, the lovers meet in secret and plan to run away together, but after a rumble-under-the-highway goes awry tragedy strikes and fate takes a vastly different turn.
