Composed in 1804, Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, or Eroica, is commonly held up as an exemplary piece of classical writing. First written as a celebratory reaction and dedicated to the political ideals of a young Napoleon, who Beethoven, and most of Europe believed to be the progressive leader who would bring down the overarching monarchy, he then withdrew this once Napoleon declared himself Emperor, betraying the ideals of Liberty, Egality and Fraternity touted during the French Revolution. Nevertheless, despite the democratic themes within the symphony, it is a regal and powerful piece, well deserving of 200 years of accolades.
