Patricia Racette returns to her iconic operatic role

First premiering at LA Opera's inaugural season in 1986, it seems fitting that during its 30th anniversary season, Salome is set to make a long-awaited comeback to the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Led once again by iconic American soprano and actress Patricia Racette as the eponymous seductress, proceedings will be conducted by maestro James Conlon with the powerful score by Richard Strauss. This version of the Biblical tale is in fact based on the scandalous play penned by one Oscar Wilde, which caused a storm when it was first published in 1891; this equally eye-opening opera is set to do the same in the 21st century.

Exploring the hidden desires of the subconcious, biblical princess Salome is besotted with a political prisoner held in her stepfather's prison; John the Baptist. Determined to have him for herself and to steer him from his faith, she engineers a seduction that has deadly consequences for the doomed prophet - but she doesn't escape unscathed herself. and she determines to have him...whatever the cost. Patricia Racette returns as the titular princess, singing opposite Tomas Tomasson (2013's The Flying Dutchman) as John.
