2014 was the year of D'angelo. Fourteen years since the release of the seminal Voodoo, the Virginian singer and multi-instrumentalist returned with his third album, Black Messiah. A dense, richly lyrical collection of funk that brought to mind the best work of Prince or Sly and the Family Stone, it was also one of the first records to address the unrest in Ferguson. Ranked by numerous publications as the best album of the year, tracks like the jazzy Sugah Daddy or the panoramic closer Another Life more than justified D'angelo's decade and a half long sabbatical.
