Los Angeles Philharmonic - The Planets at Hollywood Bowl

Why see Los Angeles Philharmonic - The Planets?

As above so below

One of the 20th Century's most enduring works of classical composition, Gustav Holst's bombastic seven-piece suite captures the imagination with its epic scope and tantalizing melodies. Join the Los Angeles Philharmonic as conducted by Karen Kamensek for a one-off performance of this cultural giant, with accompaniment from the Pacific Chorale.

Completed between 1914 and 1916, The Planets is the most popular of Holst's works (a fact that troubled him in later life). Based not around the Roman Gods as is easily assumed, each planet's character and sound comes from Astrology, an idea that fascinated Holst at the time. Each movement seeks to evoke the emotion and passion that each planet elicits in us.

Before the cosmic finale, the symphony will also perform a world-premiere commission from Adam Schoenberg and are joined by violinist Anne Akiko for Philip Glass's Violin Concerto No.1.
