Co-founded by jazz and popular music critic Ralph J. Gleason and jazz disc jockey Jimmy Lyons, the first Monterey Jazz Festival was held in California's Monterey Fairgrounds in 1958. Hosting over 500 artists over a three-day period, it is one of the most beloved and acclaimed jazz festivals in the world, with top performers including  Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Dave Bruebeck, Miles Davies, B.B King and many, many more have made appearances during its history.
